Hubble at the Arizona Science Center

April 25, 2015
Location: Phoenix, Ariz.

Celebrate 25 Years of Hubble at Arizona Science Center! We will be joined by the LROC team from Arizona State University and local astronomy clubs who will feature various hands-on activities for all ages, including telescope viewing after sunset. In the afternoon, our Dorrance Planetarium will host two free guest lectures with Dr. Jeff Hester and Dr. Will Grundy. The event will highlight the wonders of the universe unveiled by the Hubble Space Telescope.

At 1:30 p.m., Dr. Jeff Hester will present "Mission Accomplished: Hubble Space Telescope and Humankind's Understanding of Itself." Over his 30 year career as an internationally known astrophysicist, Dr. Jeff Hester was a key member of the team that repaired the Hubble Space Telescope. With one foot always on the frontiers of knowledge, he has been researcher, mentor, team leader, award-winning teacher, administrator, and speaker, to name a few of the hats he has worn. These days he is a keynote speaker and coach, helping clients find success in changing time. His Hubble image, the Pillars of Creation, has appeared on a U.S. Postage Stamp and was recently chosen by Time Magazine as among the 100 most influential photographs in history.

At 3:30 p.m., Dr. Will Grundy will present "Initial Exploration of the Pluto System in 2015." Join Dr. Will Grundy from Lowell Observatory and co-investigator of the New Horizons mission team as he shares an inside look in the initial exploration of the Pluto system in July. Find out about planned observations, spacecraft capabilities, and a brief history behind getting a spacecraft to Pluto.

Enjoy telescope viewing from 7:30 p.m.–9 p.m.
